China’s economy may be grinding slower and financial risk may be rising, but its ability to cause technological anxiety has never been greater. A combination of aggressive industrial policy at home and ambitious buying abroad has many worried that Beijing could succeed in its ambition of turning China into the world’s premier technological hub, at the expense of existing industry leaders. This issue of China Economic Quarterly focuses on China's efforts to move up the technology ladder and the risk that they will trigger a protectionist backlash.

Also in this issue:

  • Chen Long writes that despite the rapid rise in debt and the growing complexity of shadow finance, a bank crisis is some years away.
  • Tom Miller and Agatha Kratz wonder why rich countries are getting uneasy about the surge in Chinese outward investment
  • Ernan Cui looks at why persuading Chinese to stop retiring early is a tricky task
  • Joe Studwell reviews three books that show that China's tech industries are indeed creative
