China 20/20

China Economic Quarterly was founded in 1997, to cater to the needs of a small group of business executives and nerds interested in a struggling economy that then accounted for just 3% of global GDP. In the two decades since, China has moved from sideshow to center-stage, accounting for a quarter of world economic growth, and 40% of the increase in fixed investment and manufacturing during that period. Understanding China is now crucial to any serious global analysis.

But all good things come to an end, and in today’s faster-paced information environment we believe there are better ways to deliver insights on China to our readers. So this brings down the curtain on CEQ.

In this final issue, “China 20/20,” an all-star cast of contributors takes a look back at how the country has changed since 1997, and a look forward at how China, and its global impact, might evolve in the next couple of decades. The basic lesson is that it has never paid to underestimate China’s growth potential and capacity for change. The challenges of the coming decades are daunting, but it’s a good bet that China will continue to defy the skeptics and exceed expectations.
