China’s Belt and Road Initiative elicits much skepticism but is nevertheless a bold attempt to boost Asian integration under its leadership. The high costs and risks of confronting China’s growing regional might means that the US’s influence in the Asia-Pacific is likely to dwindle. But China will not have everything its own way: widespread distrust of both its strategic ambitions and its enterprises means that many countries will continue to prefer investment from the EU, US and Japan.
